16 November 1998 - AIDA Never Let Me Down!

It's no secret that writing an excellent headline will vastly improve the performance of any web site listing.

In this week's Traffic Report (see above to subscribe), I cited a test where a single headline change boosted my results by several thousand percent. To get these results, I simply applied the good old AIDA formula to my web listing headlines.  This has been used by print advertisers for decades:

Attention, Interest, Desire
Action

Now, we web marketers don't have full page magazine ads to pull this off.  Sometimes, we have to do this in one line!  Ensure that your headline will do all four AIDA steps and you have a winner:

Get their attention by standing out.  Peek their interest by speaking to their needs.  Create desire by adding immediacy.  And then the "action" takes care of itself - they click!
